Liquor Terminology

  • Body – A liquor with strength and a big mouthfeel – as opposed to "thin."
  • Bright – Denotes a fresh, lively tea with a long life left in it.
  • Brisk – The most “live” characteristic – a term often applied to Indian and Ceylon teas.
  • Coloury – Indicates a good depth of color and strength.
  • Cream – A precipitate obtained after cooling – often noticed in iced Assam teas.
  • Earthy – A taste which can be inherent in leaves from a particular origin. Often used to describe Puerh teas.
  • Flat – Not fresh.
  • Point – A bright, acidy and penetrating characteristic of a good black tea.
  • Strength (or Body) – Substance in the cup.
  • Taints – Foreign tastes or characteristics present in the taste of the liquor. Taints are usually caused by storing poorly packaged teas near sources of the foreign aromas.
  • Thin – A weak, light liquor that is utterly lacking in any positive characteristics.
